Become an Umpire - Help the game

Auckland Hockey are looking for amazing people like yourself to give umpiring a go. There's support, travel reimbursements and more available!

Umpiring is a critical part of the sport we love. Auckland Hockey Umpires Association are looking for new umpires to help lead our games. Read on to learn a bit more about what types of umpires there are, and to give it a go!

The two types of umpiring opportunities: Club Umpire vs AHUA umpire

  • Club Umpires are assigned by the club umpiring contact/captain to cover club games, which may not always be at their local ground
  • Club Umpires will likely do fewer games and are a good way to get introduced to umpiring if you're unsure or want to give it a go first
  • AHUA Umpires are assigned using the AKH tool ‘MatchRef,’ umpiring all teams with preferred grounds and times
  • The MatchRef tool can schedule umpires before or after their own games for more convenience
  • AHUA Umpires can be assigned to two games back-to-back at the same ground if preferred
  • AHUA Umpires receive higher travel reimbursement than club umpires

Club umpires are your club members who will help out and umpire a game for your club when an AHUA umpire is unavailable. They can be players, parents, siblings, former players, or in certain cases, younger umpires who have come through a JUMP or JUMP UP programme. They need to be a regular feature to qualify for payment, and not just a “Div2 Player” doing their club duty.

If you'd like to become a club umpire, give umpiring a go and strengthen both your knowledge of the game and your confidence within hockey, please contact our Umpiring Co-ordinator!

Other benefits of becoming an official AHUA Umpire

  • While learning, you'll be paired with an AHUA Umpire for support/training, aimed at those wanting to umpire more regularly
  • Opportunites to progress umpiring to tournaments and beyond
  • Greater travel reimbursements than Club Umpires
  • Provide opportunities for club umpires to take on extra games; AHUA umpires get priority, but club umpires interested in joining AHUA can be supported
  • AHUA runs accredited ‘Learn to Umpire’ courses, with sessions scheduled throughout the season
  • AHUA offers informal ‘Umpiring Basics’ sessions for club players willing to help umpire occasionally, held during regular training nights
  • AHUA can host Q&A sessions or attend Coaches/Managers meetings to answer umpiring and rules questions

If you're interested in becoming an official AHUA Umpire, they have a convenient online form you can fill out where you can list your preferences for umpiring. Just click the button below
