The Junior season generally starts in the first weekend of Term 2 (May) and concludes at the end of August. Dates are confirmed by Auckland Hockey early at the start of the year!

All junior games are played at various turfs across the Auckland region. We'll put up maps for each of the locations and update this page when they're ready, but in the meantime, Auckland Hockey has listed them here.

Practice times are dependent on coach and turf availability but generally will take place between 4-7pm on a weeknight. Training will take place at either our Training Shed at Ken Maunder Park, or at the Avondale college turf.

Your child will need a mouthguard, hockey shin pads, running or turf shoes and a hockey stick.

Mouthguards and shinguards can be purchased from a sports stores such as Just Hockey. Hockey sticks can be borrowed from the club. Please get in touch and we can help you out, or if you'd like to get an entry level pack, Just Hockey do some wonderful Starter Packs!

Junior players at WDHC wear a red shirt, red shorts and red socks. The club will provide the red shirt, and you can purchase the shorts and socks from a sports store such as Just Hockey.

Absolutely! WDHC provides a 4 week Academy Programme aimed to provide some pre-season training. Find out all about it here.

It is not necessary to attend but we recommend children attend so they can be placed in the correct team for their skill level. Players who do not attend will automatically be placed into a team based on their age group.

Yes! Players new to hockey (Y1- Y8) are welcome to join. Players will be placed in a team based on their age group.

Most teams have players with a range of skills and playing experience. We find that by the end of their first season, most players have upskilled considerably so there's definitely a place for your little legend to get into hockey at Western!

Yes, all Junior teams are mixed!

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee this. However, we make every effort to accomodate this when we can as we've found this makes hockey easier on the parents, too. Anyone else here love carpooling!?

Yes, we'd love that! We are always in need of team coaches, team managers, and general helpers (sausage sizzle, administration).

We understand that life can sometimes get in the way, or tastes can change on a whim. If your child no longer wants to play hockey part-way through the season please make sure their coach knows with as much time as possible.

Unfortunately, as fees go to Auckland Hockey for the organisation of the competitions, we're unable to refund you if your child changes their mind part-way through the season.

Apps: Your coach or manager will more than likely recommend a communications app for team organisation that you'll be invited to join.

Everyone is encouraged to watch hockey here in Auckland, and for club games there's never a fee! We highly encourage family members and friends to come along and support our Junior players - as you'll probably know, it's a huge boost to their confidence! 

Western Districts is run entirely by volunteers. Your child's coach will likely be a parent or, as they get older, a more experienced player-turned-coach.

For your child's safety, Western Districts is strict with their process for coach selection, ensuring they're of high standing, have been vetted by the police, and have the full support of the coaching manager and the club!
