With sadness we record the passing of Lomas Matheson a stalwart of WDHC and an Hon Vice President of Western. Lomas you could say was one of the old guard starting his playing career in the early in 1950’s with Owai Rovers which formed part of the Western Club. Lomas was certainly a hard and dedicated club member and had a huge involvement with bulding the club rooms at Ken Maunder Park and the building of the Rob Henry Training Pavilion which we still own at Ken Maunder.
Lomas played in the Senior mens teams for many years and was part of the 1963 team that won the Auckland competition. Lomas’s son Mark also played for Western and I believe they were the 2nd father and son combination to play in the Senior team together. Lomas was very proud of this feat.
I do personally recall playing in some teams with Lomas and remember him whilst short in statue was very fast and skillful player. It doesn’t seem that long ago but for those that can remember the days of the “Roll In” I can tell you Lomas was expert at this technique and I know he taught me a few tricks about the roll in.
We send our thoughts to Mark and his sister Diane at this sad time.
